3D Character Identity

Introduction

I have been given the task of creating a 3D character model using 3D software such as ZBrush and Maya. For me to create this character, I need to set out a plan of how my character is going to look, what accessories they may need as well as a description of why I have chosen to design this specific character. In addition to this it is best to outline and explain the backstory of this character which can include why they have specific features or why they choose to wear a certain item of clothing.

Initial Idea

My initial idea is to create a character that is either part of an apocalypse or part of a ‘Purge like’ event. Both of these would include a weapon most likely and wear dark clothing. Below I will outline what these characters would consist of, what they would wear and a brief backstory.

Character Conclusion

After outlining my two initial ideas, I believe it would be best to create ‘Tommy Phillips‘ as I am intrigued by the purge style character design and how I can develop my initial ideas into a fully finished and polished 3D character.

I also think there is more room for creativity with this character as the costume design can be much more unique than just a zombie apocalypse survivor who would generally just wear their everyday clothes. This means I can create a costume that is adventurous and unlike what a human would usually wear. Furthermore I can use this and the backstory to influence the weapon choice and its design.

Research & Initial Thoughts

I have researched different outfits and masks from films such as the purge to gain inspiration for my character. Lots of these masks tend to be based around a theme, such as animals which helps with my design since I want to incorporate deers into mine. These masks and outfits also all appear to be unique and differ from each character which reinforces my statement about this theme having more room for creativity in them.

I have gathered some reference images from these films as well as other relevant images based on prior research which will help with my first concept designs (which will be pictured at the end of this post).

All three of these masks are from various purge films.

Initial Drawings (Based on research)

Below is some initial drawings of the outfit and mask I have put together of ‘Tommy Phillips’, which consists of a clown like jumpsuit as well as a harlequin style mask with antlers on top. These will be used as reference images for designing my final character. In a later post I will develop my weapon into a more detailed concept, ready for modelling.
