Each aspect of the vinyl record packaging has had to be accurately designed and perfected in order to go into manufacturing. Most of these dimensions and specifications are fairly standard and are therefore easy to gather and produce. However some bands require more intricate detailing which therefore require more thinking.

Posters and advertising campaigns are all created with the artists ideas so they match the projects aesthetic and feel. Whether this be imagery, graphics or fonts, it is often a good idea to keep everything consistent throughout the development of the project. One way of this is using the same designer, which can be seen throughout The 1975’s ‘ A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships album of 2018. Samuel Burgess Johnson was the lead designer throughout the graphical process, from the vinyl record packaging to the advertising boards that appeared throughout London.

One possible idea is to create a Spotify Canvas video (a looping video that plays silently while you listen to a song) which has a video of something to do with the album. An initial thought I have is a looping video of the inside of a car at night with the radio displaying the album name for example.

‌My Idea

I would like to create a full graphical design portfolio for a concept album I would create myself. This would include a full album cover with singles art, the full physical range of the album, advertising campaigns (online and in person) and merchandise designs.

I would also like to experiment with creating a stage design like seen above. There would be a wide range of styles I could go for that would include moving designs and objects as well as stationary props.

Below is a rough example of the items that would be included in this portfolio. Once again I have used The 1975’s A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships as an example.
